Timofey Bordachev: Worldwide Outrage at Western Hypocrisy in Israel-Palestine Conflict
Leaders in North America and Western Europe Eroding the Foundations of Their Own Prosperity
By Valdai Club Programme Director Timofey Bordachev
My Perspective:
This article discusses Russia’s perspective on the concept of the “global majority” and how recent events, particularly the crisis in the Middle East, may impact the perception of U.S. and Western European policies by most of the world’s countries. It highlights concerns among countries in the global majority about the West’s stance on issues like the Israel-Palestine conflict and the potential for increased tension in multiple states. The article also raises questions about the West’s soft power and the growing dissent against the current state of affairs in Western countries. It emphasizes the need to consider the direction in which the construction of a new world order is moving from the perspective of the global majority, which seeks respect for existing rules and norms as the basis of international stability.
The recent events in international politics, especially the Middle East crisis, have cast a spotlight on what appears to be a glaring double standard in the West’s approach to human rights and global diplomacy. As we observe the global majority of nations, many of which have embraced the ideals of globalization while maintaining their unique perspectives on international order, there is growing disillusionment with Western policies.
One significant point of concern is the West’s handling of the Israel-Palestine conflict. While Western leaders express unwavering support for Israel, a wave of global demonstrations shows the stark contrast between official stances and the sentiments of their own citizens and those in Muslim-majority countries. The world has witnessed a resurgence of narratives accusing Western powers of being responsible for the suffering of Muslims, sparking confrontations leading to economic crises, hunger, and unemployment in many regions.
This reversal of diplomatic efforts aimed at strengthening the West’s moral authority is disheartening. The credibility of liberal democratic systems and political elites is eroding, with a perception of boundless cynicism and duplicity taking hold. The once-venerated achievements of American and Western European diplomats and organizations in supporting social development programs, inter-religious tolerance, human rights, and other civilized values are rapidly unraveling. Recent political maneuvers have increased terrorist threats, further polarized societies along religious lines, and created a risk of Western involvement in a potentially devastating Middle East conflict.
The Western media’s self-censorship and controlled content on social media platforms have raised concerns about freedom of expression and the standards applied in reporting conflicts. The West’s collective international policy is undermining its soft power and diminishing the appeal of its cultural exports, from fashion to cinema. The perception is that officials overseas may not prioritize the well-being of ordinary citizens.
The West’s approach to international relations seems to be shifting away from peaceful coexistence and non-proliferation of arms mechanisms. The lost experience of post-Cold War international reality is being reconsidered by the next generation of diplomats and military officers.
Amid the rise of right-wing and left-wing forces and the decline of centrist parties in Western countries, it’s time to reflect on the West’s global role. The dissipation of hard-earned 20th-century achievements in international politics jeopardizes global stability. It’s crucial to heed the concerns of the global majority, which doesn’t seek to dismantle existing rules and norms but wants them respected as the foundation of international stability.
The West’s future is at a crossroads, and its actions are being scrutinized by the international community. In the quest for a new world order, addressing the perceived double standards in human rights and global diplomacy is paramount.
